BGAS-CSWIP Painting Inspection Services for Pipeline, Offshore and Industrial Projects

Painting quality is established through controlled preparation, application and inspection. A BGAS-CSWIP painting inspector can provide independent project inspection at the agreed stages of coating work, from pre-painting checks through final records.

Dilenza reviews the actual assignment before proposing a profile. The selection considers the required grade, asset, substrate, painting system, service environment, applicable specification, inspection and test plan, reporting requirements, location and schedule.

The project documents define the inspection scope, acceptance criteria and decision-making authority.

What a BGAS-CSWIP Painting Inspector Can Verify

Before painting begins

  • Controlled painting specification, inspection and test plan and required hold points
  • Product data sheets, approved materials and batch information where required
  • Substrate condition, welds, edges and areas requiring preparation
  • Inspection equipment and calibration evidence where included in scope
  • Environmental limits and preparation requirements defined by the project

During surface preparation

  • Surface-cleanliness and preparation condition
  • Surface profile or roughness where required
  • Dust, soluble salts and contamination checks where specified
  • Abrasive condition and preparation method
  • Ambient conditions before coating application

During painting application

  • Steel temperature, air temperature, relative humidity and dew point
  • Paint mixing, induction time and pot life where applicable
  • Application conditions, stripe coating and recoat intervals
  • Wet-film-thickness checks where required
  • Observation of agreed hold points and the coating sequence

After painting

  • Dry-film-thickness measurements against the agreed method and criteria
  • Visual condition and coating defects
  • Repair preparation, repair application and reinspection
  • Holiday or discontinuity testing where required
  • Final inspection and documentation review where required

Inspection activities are agreed before deployment. They are not assumed from the BGAS-CSWIP grade alone.

BGAS-CSWIP Grade 1 or Grade 2: Select for the Actual Role

BGAS-CSWIP Painting Inspector Grade 1 and Grade 2 are distinct certification grades. Grade 1 is the advanced route with particular offshore-practice content and requires a valid Grade 2 certificate.

The requested grade must follow the client specification, project environment and assigned responsibilities. Grade 1 should not be requested automatically when Grade 2 and relevant project experience meet the assignment requirement.

The qualification is only one part of selection. The proposed profile must also match the asset, painting system, inspection methods, reporting format and site conditions.

Project Matching Beyond the BGAS-CSWIP Certificate

Two inspectors holding the same grade can have very different project backgrounds. Before proposing a profile, Dilenza reviews:

  • Asset type such as pipeline components, structural steel, tanks, modules or fabricated equipment
  • Substrate and painting-system technology
  • Service environment such as offshore, marine, atmospheric, immersion or industrial exposure
  • Applicable client specification, standard and inspection methods
  • Required activities such as surface-preparation inspection, DFT, testing, repairs or final acceptance
  • Site location, dates, duration, working pattern, language and reporting requirements

This helps ensure that the selected inspector is relevant to the work, not simply qualified at the requested grade.

One Visit, Recurring Surveillance or Resident BGAS-CSWIP Inspection

One defined inspection visit

For a surface-preparation check, painting hold point, dry-film-thickness verification, repair inspection, final inspection or other defined project milestone.

Recurring painting surveillance

For repeat attendance across supplier fabrication, pipeline work or a painting campaign when continuous presence is not required.

Resident or rotational painting inspection

For continuous work at a supplier, fabrication yard, construction site or offshore project. This arrangement can follow the programme across preparation, application, repairs and final records.

BGAS-CSWIP Painting Inspection Services FAQ

What is a BGAS-CSWIP painting inspection service?

It is a project inspection service delivered by a BGAS-CSWIP-qualified painting inspector whose profile is reviewed against the required grade, painting system, asset, specification, site and agreed assignment scope.

Should I request a Grade 1 or Grade 2 inspector?

Follow the client specification and the responsibilities assigned to the inspector. Grade 1 can be relevant to advanced offshore-focused roles. If the requirement is unclear, send the available project documents for review.

Can I request a BGAS-CSWIP inspector for a pipeline or offshore project?

Yes. Include the asset, painting system, applicable specification, required grade, location and planned dates. Relevant pipeline, marine or offshore experience can then be considered during profile selection.

Is BGAS-CSWIP the same as AMPP, former NACE CIP or FROSIO?

No. They are different coating-inspector certification schemes. The required credential must follow the project specification. See Coating Inspection Services for broader project support.

Can the inspector check surface preparation and dry-film thickness?

Yes, where those activities are included in the agreed scope and governed by the applicable project specification and acceptance criteria.

Can we review the inspector’s qualification before assignment?

Where appropriate, relevant qualification details, CV information and project experience can be submitted for client technical review before deployment.
