EN 15085 Welding Inspection Services for Railway Manufacturing

EN 15085 welding inspection services provide independent verification of the project-defined welding activities on railway vehicles and components. The applicable EN 15085 part and edition, manufacturer classification where applicable, inspection stages, records, testing requirements and acceptance criteria are established by controlled project documentation.

Dilenza scopes the inspection assignment around those documents, the actual component and the manufacturing stage. This gives the project team an objective record of what was reviewed, observed and reported at the fabrication shop, during assembly, at a supplier, or during repair work.

For a broader service overview, see welding inspection services. For wider rail-manufacturing coverage, see rail transportation inspection.

Rail Welding Inspection at the Right Production Stages

Before production

Review the issued scope, drawings, inspection and test plan, procedure documentation and welder or welding-operator qualification records where they are included in the assignment. Confirm the current document revisions, material traceability, joint preparation and agreed hold or witness points before work progresses.

During fabrication or assembly

Verify the in-process activities named in the agreed scope, such as fit-up, visual checks, production welding surveillance and project-defined controls. Record observations against the applicable project documentation and identify items that require action through the agreed reporting process.

At completion or after repair

Carry out visual or dimensional checks where assigned. Review or witness NDT status only where requested, without presenting this service as NDT performance. Record repair follow-up, open items and reinspection status when they form part of the assignment.

The Project Documents Define the Rail-Welding Scope

The phrase “EN 15085” is not a complete inspection scope. The service must be built from the documents that define what is being made, what must be checked, and when the inspection points occur. This prevents an inspector being matched only to a standard name when the rail component and project responsibilities are specific.

Where available, send:

  • The applicable EN 15085 part and edition
  • The manufacturer classification or component classification stated in the project documents
  • The execution scope, drawings and current revision status
  • The inspection and test plan, hold points and witness points
  • WPS, WPQR and welder or welding-operator qualification records relevant to the assignment
  • Material traceability, NDT and reporting requirements
  • The vehicle, assembly, component or repair scope
  • Fabrication or assembly dates and the project location

You can also consult Dilenza’s standards and codes overview before sending the request.

EN 15085 Manufacturer Certification Is Not an Inspector Credential

Book this service when the project needs independent inspection and reporting. Do not use it to request EN 15085 manufacturer certification, classification-level determination, certification-body assessment, design approval, welding coordination, WPS or WPQR approval, a Declaration of Conformity, statutory conformity assessment, or a final acceptance decision.

An inspector’s relevant rail-welding experience and project-required competence are matched to the assignment. Dilenza does not issue, approve, assess or certify a manufacturer under EN 15085 through this service. Responsibilities for manufacture, certification, controlled documentation and final acceptance remain with the appropriate parties under the project framework.

Match the Inspector to the Rail Component and Scope

The standard alone does not define the right inspector profile. Selection should reflect the actual rail manufacturing work and the competence required in the project documents.

Relevant matching factors can include:

  • Railway vehicle, rolling-stock or rail-component experience
  • Vehicle bodies, underframes, bogies, structural assemblies or equipment frames
  • Material type, welding process and production environment
  • Client-specified welding-inspection credentials
  • NDT witnessing or reporting requirements where included in scope
  • Location, language, working schedule and assignment duration

For the wider qualification framework, see welding inspector qualifications.

Where the requirement is broader supplier surveillance, testing, dimensional verification or pre-shipment control rather than rail welding alone, use vendor inspection services.

One Visit, Recurring Rail Production Coverage, or Resident Inspection

Use a focused visit for a defined rail-manufacturing hold point, repair stage or pre-shipment activity. Use recurring coverage when production includes repeated vehicles or components. Use resident coverage when the project requires regular or continuous presence at a fabrication facility or assembly location.

For a single planned inspection, see short-term inspection. For repeated programme coverage, see recurring inspection. For continuing project presence, see resident inspectors.

What the Inspection Record Can Cover

The report content is agreed before the assignment starts. Depending on the defined scope, the inspection record can cover:

  • Fabrication, assembly or repair observation reports
  • Agreed photo records
  • Document and revision-status checks
  • Material traceability and qualification-record status
  • NDT result or witness status, not NDT testing performed by Dilenza
  • Repair, open-item and reinspection status

The report must identify the project documents used and the inspection activities actually completed. Do not publish a generic “EN 15085 compliant” statement unless the responsible project authority has authorized it.

EN 15085 Welding Inspection Services FAQ

Does this service provide EN 15085 manufacturer certification?

No. Dilenza provides independent project inspection and reporting only. It does not issue EN 15085 manufacturer certification, establish a manufacturer classification level, act as a certification body, or make a final conformity or acceptance decision.

Is an EN 15085 classification level an inspector qualification?

No. Manufacturer classification or certification relates to the welding manufacturer and the documented rail-work scope. The project must state the required inspector competence. Inspector matching can take account of rail-welding experience and the credentials specified in the project documents.

Can the inspection cover a rail-component supplier as well as final assembly?

Yes, if the scope identifies each site, component, inspection stage and schedule. State whether the work is at a supplier, a fabrication shop, a vehicle assembly site, or more than one location.

Does Dilenza perform NDT?

This service can include NDT status review or witnessing only when that is written into the agreed scope. It is not a request to perform NDT. Describe any testing requirement separately so the assignment is scoped correctly.

Can the scope cover maintenance or repair welding?

It can, where the controlled project documentation identifies the repair scope, applicable requirements, inspection points and reporting needs. Send those documents with the request.

Request an EN 15085 Welding Inspector

Send the project location, vehicle or component, fabrication or repair stage, target dates and available project documents. If known, include the applicable EN 15085 part, edition and manufacturer or component classification stated in the scope. Dilenza will use this information to define the inspection request and identify a suitable inspector profile for the agreed work.

By submitting, you agree that Dilenza may use these project details to process your inspection request. Do not include information you are not authorized to share.
