ISO 12944 Coating Inspection Services for Steel Structures
ISO 12944 is the international series for corrosion protection of steel structures by protective paint systems. When it is named in the controlled project documents, the inspection assignment must follow the applicable parts and edition, project coating specification, ITP, product data sheets and agreed inspector responsibilities.
Dilenza supports project-specific inspection requests for protective coating work at suppliers, fabrication shops and project sites. The assignment may cover one defined hold point, recurring surveillance or a longer on-site presence. We do not replace the coating contractor’s quality-control function, select the paint system or set the project’s acceptance criteria. The inspector verifies the agreed scope and reports what was reviewed, witnessed and observed.
Verify the Coating Work at the Stages That Matter
The correct inspection scope is established from the controlled project documents before mobilisation. Depending on the agreed assignment, the inspector may support the following stages.
Before Surface Preparation
- Review the applicable ISO 12944 requirement, coating specification, ITP and document hierarchy
- Check the coating-system schedule, product data sheets and project-defined application requirements
- Verify the planned inspection points, reporting format and escalation route
- Review project requirements for substrate condition, edges, welds and surface treatment where included in the scope
- Check the defined inspection equipment and calibration records where required
Surface Preparation
- Verify the project-defined prepared-surface condition
- Check surface cleanliness, surface profile, dust or soluble-salt testing only where specified
- Observe the defined preparation method and hold points
- Record the agreed inspection results before coating progresses
During Coating Application
- Verify coating-material identification, batch traceability and mixing requirements where assigned
- Monitor ambient and steel conditions against the project-defined limits
- Observe stripe-coat, application and recoat activities where included in the scope
- Verify wet-film-thickness checks only where specified
- Record observations and deviations through the agreed project route
Final Verification and Close-Out
- Carry out dry-film-thickness verification and visual checks where included in the assignment
- Witness holiday, adhesion, cure or other testing only where defined by the project
- Follow agreed repair and reinspection activities
- Review the agreed inspection records, photographs and final documentation
The required test method, acceptance criteria, instrument and inspector responsibility must be stated in the project documentation. A standard name alone does not define the full coating-inspection scope.
ISO 12944 Is a Standard, Not an Inspector Qualification
ISO 12944 defines the protective-coating framework for the steel structure. It does not identify the required inspector qualification.
Projects may separately require AMPP, former NACE CIP, FROSIO, BGAS-CSWIP or another specified credential. If a qualification is stated in the specification, include it in the request. Dilenza considers the required qualification together with relevant coating-system, asset, environment, location and scope experience.
For qualification-led requests, see AMPP coating inspectors or FROSIO coating inspectors.
The Coating Specification Defines the Actual Requirement
ISO 12944 should not be treated as a complete inspection plan on its own. The project documents must define which parts apply and what must be verified. Share the available information so the requested profile can be matched correctly.
- Steel structure, equipment or fabricated package being coated
- Fabrication-shop, supplier or project-site location
- Exposure environment and corrosivity category where defined
- Required durability range and coating-system schedule where defined
- Surface-preparation requirements and inspection criteria
- Product data sheets, ITP, purchase-order quality requirements and client specifications
- Required inspector qualification, authority, reporting format, dates and duration
If the applicable ISO 12944 edition or the requested inspection scope is unclear, send the available documentation. The requirement should be confirmed from the controlled project documents before an inspector is proposed.
Independent ISO 12944 Inspection for Shop and Site Work
Protective coating quality develops throughout preparation, application and final verification. Dilenza can support an independent inspection assignment at a supplier, fabrication facility, construction site, shipyard or other project location, within the responsibilities agreed before mobilisation.
The assignment can be arranged for:
- Fabricated steelwork before dispatch
- Structural steel coating at a fabrication shop
- Site application, touch-up or repair work
- Defined ITP hold points and witness points
- Final coating inspection and documentation review
- Multi-location supplier or project programmes
The inspector’s authority, reporting format, project contacts and escalation route are agreed before the assignment begins.
One Hold Point, Recurring Surveillance or Resident Coverage
Choose the inspection model that follows the coating programme and production risk.
Defined Visit
For a specific surface-preparation check, coating hold point, dry-film-thickness verification, repair inspection or final inspection. See short-term inspection support.
Recurring Inspection
For planned attendance at preparation, primer, intermediate-coat, final-coat and repair stages. See recurring inspection services.
Resident Inspection
For sustained coating work where continuity of inspection, documentation and communication is required. See resident inspector services.
What You Receive From an ISO 12944 Inspection Assignment
The reporting requirements are agreed before mobilisation. Depending on the assigned scope, the project team may receive:
- Inspection visit reports or daily reports
- Environmental-condition records where required
- Surface-preparation, surface-profile or contamination results where specified
- Coating-material and batch-traceability records where assigned
- Wet-film or dry-film-thickness records where specified
- Holiday, adhesion or other test records where required
- Photographic evidence, repair status, observations and punch-list items
- ITP status and final inspection summary within the agreed responsibility
The reporting does not replace the coating contractor’s own quality records, engineering authority or the project’s final acceptance process.
For broad inspection support across other coating standards, see coating inspection services. For general information on the standards landscape, see inspection standards and codes.
ISO 12944 Coating Inspection Services FAQ
What does an ISO 12944 coating inspection service cover?
It is a project-specific independent inspection assignment for protective coating work on steel structures where ISO 12944 is named in the controlled project documents. The scope can cover a defined inspection point, recurring surveillance or resident coverage, depending on the agreed responsibilities.
Is ISO 12944 an inspector certification?
No. ISO 12944 is a protective-coating standard series. An inspector qualification, such as AMPP or FROSIO, is a separate project requirement that should be taken from the specification or ITP.
Can Dilenza select the paint system for the project?
No. The coating system, required durability, surface preparation and acceptance criteria must be determined by the controlled project documents and appropriate project authority. Dilenza provides independent inspection against the agreed scope.
Can the inspector support fabrication-shop and site work?
Yes, where the inspector profile, agreed scope, location and project requirements are suitable. State whether the work is at a supplier, fabrication shop, construction site or across more than one location.
Are ISO 8501, ISO 8502, ISO 8503 or ISO 19840 relevant?
They may be relevant where the project coating specification identifies them. The inspection scope should use the standards, methods and acceptance criteria stated in the controlled documents rather than assuming that every related standard applies.
Can the inspector measure DFT or witness holiday testing?
Where these activities are required by the specification and included in the assigned responsibility, they can form part of the inspection scope. State the required test, instrument, acceptance criteria and reporting requirement in the request where known.
Do I need to know the applicable ISO 12944 edition before requesting an inspector?
The project documents should determine the applicable parts and edition. If this is unclear, send the coating specification, ITP, purchase order or drawings so the requirement can be reviewed before profile selection.
Can I request one inspection day?
Yes. Use the request form to describe the inspection stage, location and required date. The scope can also be arranged as recurring or resident coverage when the coating programme requires it.
What should I send with the request?
Send the location, steel structure or equipment, coating system if known, inspection scope, applicable standard, required qualification, date and expected duration. Where available, attach the ITP, coating specification, product data sheets, drawings or purchase-order requirements.
