Welding quality control

Independent Welding Inspection at Chinese Manufacturers

Welding quality cannot be effectively verified only when fabrication is complete.

Important requirements are established and controlled throughout the manufacturing process—from welding documentation and material preparation to fit-up, production welding, NDT, repairs and final acceptance.

Dilenza provides independent welding inspectors who can attend your Chinese supplier according to the controlled project documentation and defined inspection responsibilities.

Inspection may support:

  • Welding Documentation
  • Material Traceability
  • Joint Preparation
  • Fit-Up
  • Production Welding
  • Visual Inspection
  • NDT Witnessing
  • Repairs
  • Final Weld Verification

The objective is not simply to place a welding certificate at the factory. It is to provide an inspector with the right qualification and relevant experience for the actual welded equipment.

The certificate confirms qualification. The equipment determines suitability.

Welding inspection scope

What Can a Welding Inspector Verify?

The exact scope should come from the project's ITP, specification, drawings and applicable welding requirements. Depending on the assignment, inspection can cover activities before, during and after welding.

  1. Before welding

    Documentation & Preparation

The inspector may verify project-defined requirements relating to:

    • Approved drawings and fabrication documents
    • Welding Procedure Specifications
    • Procedure qualification records
    • Welder or welding-operator qualifications
    • Material identification
    • Material certificates
    • Traceability
    • Welding consumables
    • Joint configuration
    • Bevel preparation
    • Fit-up
    • Root gap
    • Alignment
    • Tack welding
    • Welding equipment status
    • Preheat requirements
    • Environmental conditions where applicable

The purpose is to identify deviations before welding progresses beyond a stage where correction becomes more difficult.

  2. During welding

    Production Welding Surveillance

Depending on the inspection scope, surveillance can include:

    • Verification of the applicable WPS
    • Welder identification
    • Welding process
    • Welding consumables
    • Preheat temperature
    • Interpass temperature
    • Joint cleanliness
    • Welding sequence
    • Production technique
    • Distortion control
    • Back gouging where applicable
    • Intermediate visual inspection
    • Weld identification and traceability
    • Compliance with project-defined fabrication requirements

Recurring surveillance can be particularly useful where production continues over several days or weeks and welding quality needs to be monitored throughout fabrication.

  3. After welding

    Weld Examination & Verification

    Post-weld inspection can include:

    • Visual weld inspection
    • Weld profile
    • Weld dimensions
    • Surface condition
    • Undercut
    • Overlap
    • Cracks
    • Arc strikes
    • Spatter where relevant
    • Misalignment
    • Fillet-weld dimensions
    • Weld identification
    • Dimensional verification related to welded fabrication
    • NDT status
    • Repair status
    • Documentation
    • Project-defined acceptance criteria

Acceptance must follow the applicable project standard and controlled documentation, not generic workmanship expectations.

NDT & repairs

NDT Witnessing and Weld Repair Follow-Up

Where required by the ITP, welding inspection can be coordinated with project-defined non-destructive examination.

  • VT
  • PT
  • MT
  • UT
  • RT
  • PAUT / TOFD where specifically required

The welding inspector's responsibility can include reviewing or witnessing activities according to the agreed scope, verifying the status of examination and following identified weld repairs.

Repair follow-up may include:

  1. Defect Identification
  2. Repair Procedure
  3. Excavation / Preparation
  4. Re-Welding
  5. Re-Examination
  6. Close-Out

NDT execution should be performed by personnel holding the qualifications required by the applicable project documentation.

Documentation

WPS, PQR & Welder Qualification Verification

Welding quality begins before production welding starts.

Depending on the agreed scope, the inspector may verify the status and applicability of welding documentation such as:

WPS

Welding Procedure Specification

Verification can include whether the correct approved procedure is available for the production weld being inspected.

PQR / WPQR

Procedure Qualification Record

Where included in the scope, documentation can be checked against the applicable project requirements and the WPS being used.

WPQ

Welder Performance Qualification

The inspector can verify that the welder identification and qualification correspond to the production welding activity according to the project-defined requirements.

Inspection may also verify traceability between:

  • Welder
  • Weld Number
  • Drawing
  • WPS
  • NDT Status
  • Repair Status

The exact documentation requirements depend on the applicable code, client specification and project quality plan.

Welding documentation only adds value when it matches what is actually happening on the fabrication floor.

Inspector qualifications

AWS CWI, CSWIP & IWI Welding Inspectors in China

The required welding-inspection qualification should be defined by the client, project specification or applicable contractual requirements. Depending on the project, Dilenza can review profiles holding qualifications such as:

AWS

AWS Certified Welding Inspector – CWI

Often requested for projects operating under AWS requirements or where the purchaser specifically requires CWI certification.

CSWIP

CSWIP 3.1 Welding Inspector · CSWIP 3.2 Senior Welding Inspector

Commonly requested for international fabrication, oil and gas, marine, structural and EPC projects.

IWI

International Welding Inspector

IWI-qualified profiles can be considered where required by the project.

NDT

NDT Qualifications

Where relevant, welding inspector profiles may also hold qualifications or experience related to VT, PT, MT, UT, RT interpretation and other project-specified NDT methods.

Qualification alone is not the final selection criterion. Dilenza can also consider:

  • Equipment Experience
  • Materials
  • Welding Processes
  • Industry
  • Applicable Codes
  • Fabrication Complexity
  • Inspection Responsibilities
Explore Inspector Qualifications
Project-specific matching

A Welding Inspector Is Not Interchangeable

Two inspectors may both hold CSWIP 3.1 or AWS CWI certification and still be suited to very different assignments.

An inspector experienced in structural steel may not be the right profile for a pressure vessel. A shipbuilding welding inspector may have very different fabrication experience from someone working primarily on process piping.

Duplex stainless steel, heavy-wall pressure equipment, large tubular structures or automated welding can introduce further experience requirements. Dilenza therefore reviews the actual welding application before proposing profiles.

Assignment models

One Weld Inspection or Continuous Fabrication Surveillance

The required level of welding inspection depends on the manufacturing program.

One Visit

For one defined activity such as:

  • Fit-Up
  • Hold Point
  • Welding Qualification Activity
  • NDT Witness Point
  • Repair Verification
  • Final Weld Inspection

Recurring

Repeated welding inspection throughout fabrication. Suitable where important welding activities occur across several manufacturing stages. Recurring attendance can help maintain visibility over:

  • Fit-Up
  • Production Welding
  • NDT
  • Repairs
  • Fabrication Progress

Resident

Frequent or continuous welding-inspection presence at the supplier for longer fabrication programs. Resident coverage can help maintain continuity across:

  • Welding Progress
  • Inspector Findings
  • NDT Status
  • Repairs
  • ITP Points
  • Documentation
  • Reporting

Multi-Site

Welding inspection coordinated across several Chinese fabrication facilities or suppliers. Particularly useful where one project includes different welded packages manufactured in different regions.

Welding surveillance

Identify Welding Issues Before Final Inspection

Final inspection alone may identify visible problems, but it cannot recreate manufacturing stages that are no longer accessible.

Once welding is complete:

  • Root conditions may no longer be visible
  • Fit-up cannot be reconstructed
  • Preheat conditions cannot be retrospectively confirmed
  • Welder activity may be difficult to verify
  • Internal welds may become inaccessible
  • Components may proceed to assembly
  • Coating may cover fabricated surfaces
  • Equipment may already be prepared for shipment

Recurring welding surveillance provides independent visibility while these activities are actually taking place. For technically critical fabrication, this can provide considerably more useful project information than relying only on a final visual inspection.

Inspect the welding process while the evidence still exists.

Reporting

Clear Welding Inspection Records

Depending on the agreed scope, Dilenza welding inspection reports can document:

  • Inspection date and location
  • Equipment inspected
  • Fabrication status
  • Drawing or weld references
  • Documentation reviewed
  • Welding activities observed
  • WPS reference
  • Welder identification where required
  • Fit-up observations
  • Visual inspection results
  • NDT status
  • Identified deviations
  • Non-conformities
  • Weld repairs
  • Outstanding points
  • Photographic evidence
  • Follow-up status
  • Inspector comments

Reporting should provide the project team with a clear technical record of what was inspected, what was observed and what remains open.
