Industrial inspection in Germany

Independent Technical Oversight for German Manufacturing

Germany has one of the world's most developed and diversified manufacturing economies, with particular strength in machinery and equipment, metals, chemicals, energy technology, transportation equipment and advanced industrial manufacturing.

Manufacturing represents more than one fifth of German value added, while German manufacturers generate around 29% of EU manufacturing gross value added. Germany is also a leading international location for machinery and equipment production.

For international buyers and EPC contractors sourcing complex equipment from Germany, this creates an unusual inspection challenge: the suppliers are often technically specialized, and so must be the inspector.

A welding inspector experienced with structural steel may not necessarily be the most suitable profile for a pressure vessel, rail vehicle, steam turbine or chemical-process skid. Dilenza therefore reviews the actual equipment and technical scope before proposing an inspector.

Profile selection can depend on the:

  • Equipment
  • Materials
  • Welding processes
  • Manufacturing methods
  • Pressure-equipment experience
  • Rail experience
  • Machinery experience
  • Applicable standards

We can support industrial inspection services in Germany at:

  • Machinery manufacturers
  • Pressure equipment manufacturers
  • Steel fabricators
  • Energy equipment suppliers
  • Process equipment manufacturers
  • Rail suppliers
  • Shipyards
  • Piping fabricators
  • Industrial project sites

The inspection scope can follow controlled documentation including:

Inspection & Test Plan · Technical Specification · Purchase Order · Drawings · Client Procedures · Applicable Standards

The supplier defines the location. The equipment defines the expertise.

What is being inspected?

Equipment and Projects We Support in Germany

Machinery & Engineered Equipment

Industrial Machinery · Production Equipment · Mechanical Systems · Heavy Assemblies · Specialized Equipment

Machinery and plant engineering are central to Germany's industrial economy, supplying complex equipment to energy, manufacturing, chemicals, mining, infrastructure and other sectors. Inspection can support fabrication, welding, mechanical assembly, dimensions, functional testing, FAT and documentation. For complex equipment packages, inspection can follow several manufacturing stages rather than only the final acceptance test.

Pressure Equipment & Piping

Pressure Vessels · Heat Exchangers · Boilers · Reactors · Piping · Valves · Skids

Germany's chemical, energy and industrial sectors maintain a substantial supply chain for pressure and process equipment. Inspection can support materials, traceability, welding, NDT witnessing, dimensions, pressure testing, FAT and documentation. Depending on the project, controlled specifications may reference requirements such as PED, AD 2000, ASME, EN or ISO. Dilenza's inspection role is defined by the purchaser's technical scope and does not replace any legally required conformity-assessment function.

Steel & Heavy Fabrication

Heavy Weldments · Structural Steel · Frames · Platforms · Industrial Structures · Large Assemblies

Germany maintains major steelmaking and downstream fabrication capability, particularly around Duisburg, Salzgitter and other industrial centers. Duisburg remains an especially important steel location, with substantial modernization and transformation projects continuing there, including major new steelmaking infrastructure. Inspection can support material identification, fit-up, welding, dimensional verification, NDT witnessing, coating and final verification.

Energy & Power Equipment

Transformers · Turbines · Power Systems · Mechanical Packages · Energy Infrastructure

Germany combines conventional industrial engineering with extensive manufacturing capability for grid and energy-transition projects. Siemens Energy is expanding its Nuremberg large-transformer factory through a €220 million investment that will increase manufacturing capacity by approximately 50%. Görlitz also remains a production center for industrial steam turbines used in power, biomass, waste-to-energy and industrial applications. Inspection can support manufacturing, fabrication, assembly, dimensions, testing, FAT and documentation.

Chemical & Process Equipment

Reactors · Tanks · Pressure Systems · Process Piping · Heat Exchangers · Mechanical Packages

Germany is Europe's largest chemical production market, with around 2,100 chemical companies. The Rhine industrial corridor is especially important: BASF's Ludwigshafen site remains its largest integrated Verbund location and continues to receive new industrial investment, including additional production facilities commissioned in 2026. Inspection can support pressure equipment, process piping, fabricated systems, tanks, welding, testing and protective coatings.

Rail & Transportation Equipment

Rolling Stock · Bogies · Rail Structures · Components · Mechanical Systems

Germany maintains one of Europe's largest rail-technology ecosystems, with major manufacturers operating rolling-stock production, components, maintenance and digital rail activities across many German locations. Inspection can support fabrication, structural welding, components, mechanical assembly, dimensional verification and testing. Where applicable, relevant EN 15085 experience can be included in inspector matching.

Shipbuilding & Offshore Energy

Ships · Marine Structures · Offshore Platforms · Converter Platforms · Marine Equipment

Northern Germany combines traditional shipbuilding with an increasingly important offshore-energy fabrication market. Major shipbuilding activity continues in Papenburg, while Rostock is expanding into large offshore HVDC structures — a 2 GW offshore converter platform topside is to be manufactured in Rostock-Warnemünde. Inspection can support structural welding, heavy fabrication, marine piping, mechanical equipment, dimensions, NDT witnessing and protective coatings.

Project-specific matching

The Right Inspector, Not Just the Nearest Inspector

Inspector selection starts with the technical requirement.

Inspector selection should be based on the project requirements, including the applicable code, equipment type, welding processes, qualification level and relevant fabrication experience. An inspector suitable for structural steel may not be the best profile for a steam turbine, pressure vessel, rail vehicle or chemical-process system.

Vendor inspection

Technical Visibility Before Equipment Leaves the Supplier

Independent vendor inspection in Germany provides technical visibility while equipment is still being manufactured.

For complex machinery, pressure equipment and fabricated systems, waiting until final inspection can mean that important manufacturing stages are already inaccessible.

Depending on the client's ITP:

Documentation

Confirm the applicable technical requirements and inspection stages.

Materials

Verify material identification, certification and traceability.

Manufacturing / Fabrication

Attend agreed manufacturing, welding, fabrication and assembly activities.

Hold & Witness Points

Provide independent technical presence at project-defined milestones.

Testing / FAT

Witness NDT, pressure, functional or acceptance testing within the agreed scope.

Final Verification

Complete the agreed inspection before release or shipment.

Inspection can provide visibility into:

  • Manufacturing progress
  • Material identification and traceability
  • Welding and fabrication
  • Dimensional requirements
  • Mechanical assembly
  • NDT status
  • Pressure or functional testing
  • Protective coatings
  • Technical documentation
  • Project-defined acceptance requirements

Issues identified during manufacturing can then be addressed while the equipment is still at the supplier.

Diligence before the equipment leaves the supplier.

  • CSWIP 3.1
  • CSWIP 3.2
  • International Welding Inspector
  • Relevant NDT Qualifications

Protective Coatings

  • AMPP

Independent project inspection vs. statutory inspection

Germany has an established regulatory and accredited inspection framework. Certain pressure equipment, installations, products and regulated activities may require involvement from a notified body, approved inspection body or another specifically authorized organization. Dilenza's ordinary vendor or purchaser inspection does not replace statutory inspection, notified-body conformity assessment, certification or another legally required function. Where such involvement is required, it should be identified separately from the independent project-inspection scope.

Flexible project support

Inspection Presence Matched to the Project

One Visit · Recurring · Resident · Shutdown · Multi-Site

This can be particularly useful when machinery, pressure equipment, steel structures and auxiliary systems are manufactured by separate suppliers for the same project.
